OFFLINE: about the club

Offline is a friendly and fun club night put together by the Brixton-based, non-profit urban75 website.

The events take on different formats - sometimes we have a full night of cabaret and live acts, other nights it's a DJ mash-up - but whatever we've got going on it's always fun, friendly, totally free and a whole load of fun!

Offline

Live acts have included TV comedians Richard Herring and Stewart Lee (Lee & Herring) and Robert Newman (Newman and Baddiel), award winning comics Robin Ince, Shazia Mirza and Josie Long, Howard Marks (Mr Nice), Jim Bob (Carter USM), Mercury Prize nominees The Portico Quartet, The Thirst, Milk Kan, Mark Hibbett, Tom Robinson (TRB), TV Smith (The Adverts), Gina Birch (The Raincoats) and Katy Carr with guest DJ slots from Lester Square (Monochrome Set) and performances from Vic Lambrusco, Luke Wright, The Actionettes and much more more!

The night also features a regular cabaret bill of political stand-up, spoken word and poetry along with a shedload of DJs playing an eclectic mix of music from post-punk to Motown to indie to ska to dance .

We've also had all-girl 60s dance troupes, samba bands bands with 40 drummers, beat box artists, country bands, rappers, book readings, festival film showings, activist videos, card tricks, and, err, a Human Fruit Machine - it's a bit like a micro free festival with artists playing short sets (20-25 mins) in front of lively and appreciative crowds.

The Londonist magazine described it as being, "Like someone's friendly house party, opened up for the general public....Entertaining, friendly, and free."

Offline takes place in several locations around Brixton, south London and occasionally New York and entry is alway free, with pub prices at the bar and there's none of arsey dress code nonsense either.

BRIEF HISTORY

The club started life in the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton in February 2004, but ever-growing crowds forced a move to larger, multi-room premises at Brixton's famous Dogstar club followed by additional fortnightly 'Offline2' events at Birkbeck College, monthly nights at the Prince Albert in central London and a one-off event in New York on November 2005.

In December 2005, we moved to Brixton JAMM which offers an amazing sound system and top-end lighting rig to do justice to our performers, and in 2008 we invested in a top notch sound system so we could put on bi-monthly great nights of live music in the Albert pub.

Just like the website that spawned it, Offline is completely free!

THE MAIN VENUES: BRIXTON JAMM and the PRINCE ALBERT

Both venues are served by good public transport links: see map. We also do occasional shows at the Alma, Crystal Palace, Charterhouse, central London and various venues in New York.

WANT TO PERFORM AT OFFLINE?

We're always interested in putting on interesting new and established acts - but remember - the night is free, so everyone only gets paid two pints of lovely, cold beer (or wine - or tea and home made cakes!). If you'd like to play at Offline, please contact us at info@urban75.org

WANT TO BOOK OFFLINE?

We can put together a great show, whether it's DJs only or with bands, spoken word, cabaret, acoustic acts, comedy - whatever you like! Contact us at info@urban75.org
