A weekend in the Peak District

Hathersage walk

I'm too knackered to post up all the photos, so here's a handful from the urban75 walk club's weekend walking (and drinking, natch) trip to Hathersage in the beautiful Peak District.

Hathersage walk

The trip was fantastic, the walking superb, the drinking fierce and apart from the nightly roar of a thousand snorers and the thunder of the hob-nail booted elephants staying above us in out Bunk House, everything was perfect - even the weather defied the gloomy forecast!

New York Guide

New York City Guide: Offbeat destinations for adventurous visitors

With the considerable help of a NY resident on the excellent Wired New York forums, I've posted up a comprehensive insider's guide to interesting sights to see in New York.

New York Museums
New York Neighbourhoods
More neighbourhoods
New York Fun Rides
New York Parks and City Squares
Food and Drink

There's tons of things that I haven't seen out of that lot, so I'll definitely be making a few visits to some of the less obvious destinations!

Goodbye to the Intrepid Fox, London

Intrepid Fox, Wardour Street
Once a favoured haunt of the urban75 crew back in our tight-trousered, hard rockin' days, the Intrepid Fox has been a legendary boozer on the music scene for decades.

Once patronised by the likes of Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, the Sex Pistols, Zodiac Mindwarp and hellraising actor Richard Harris, in latter years the pub had become one of the last rock'n'roll boozers left in central London.

With only a month's notice given of its impending demise, a hastily assembled campaign was started to try and save the pub but was unable to prevent its closure in September, 2006.

Brixton sunset - D80 snaps

Brixton sunset, Nikon D80

After flogging a couple of photos, I decided to spend the moolah on a shiny new Nikon D80 camera - and so far I'm loving it!

There's some nice new touches and improvements - the larger LCD is a vast improvement - and the interface has been considerably enhanced.

Although it's a fair bit smaller than the D70, it's still not as small as I'd like but I guess that's the price I have to pay for superb quality pictures.

I'll take it for a proper 'test run' soon, but here's a couple of handheld shots (400ISO, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Programme -2.25 exp comp).

Gogol Bordello rock Brixton

Sorry for the crap pics (taken on my trusty Treo 650), but Gogol Bordello were amazing tonight at the Brixton Academy.

It's a great, old school, large size venue with no seats and none of this 'you can't bring beer into the arena' bollocks and perfect for the no-nonsense, rip it up gypsy punk of the band.

Here's their description on Wikipedia:
Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999. They are renowned for their frenetic, theatrical stage shows. Much of their sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as most of their members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some of their albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub.

They were described by Phil Jupitus on Jools Holland Live as a bit like "The Clash having a fight with The Pogues in Eastern Europe."

We loved 'em, and the later on retired to the Albert for some top sounds, courtesy of DJ Miss Feelgood.

How Does It Feel To Be Loved?

Played a DJ set at one of my fave clubs, How Does It Feel To Be Loved? last night.

The club is bi-monthly, switching between a north London venue and the trusty Canterbury Arms in Brixton, and plays indie pop, northern soul, Tamla Motown, girl groups, and sixties heartbreak.

After foolishly trying to push the envelope last time and experiencing the floor-clearing power of the KLF, this time I gave 'em what they wanted - and lots of it!

With a non-stop onslaught of Motown, Morrissey, Dexys, The Jam, The Who, Camera Obscura, Belle and Sebastian the dancefloor was pwned even surviving a risky edgy pop excursion into XTC-land.

It was great fun. Cheers Ian!

Bethnal Green Working Men's Club

Went to the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club last night and saw this lot:

The Mount Cherries

The Temporary Shelters

The Actionettes also did a set - and check out Jamie's (Action Man) dance floor action. Electric!

I rather like the Working Men's Club - even if it has become painfully hip - although the 'bottle only' beer policy is a fucking pain.
