We took a return trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway when we were up in Whitby (the steam train conveniently runs from Whitby station), and it was a lovely journey through the moors.

Levisham must be the most remote heritage railway level crossing in the UK to also be equipped with fully incongruous lifting barriers!
Yet other heritage lines get away with normal crossing gates which as you may have guessed are my favourite and also serve to keep unattended dogs away from the tracks unlike at Askam.
Lifting barriers are little more than a joke. Small wonder road vehicles brush them aside like a pesky mosquito.
