This set of photos was taken late at night around the Amsterdam red light district, and also in two bars we visited in the area: the Excalibur bar and the San Francisco ‘nightpub.’

The red light district is a strange place, with prostitutes pouting and posing behind full length glass doors while hoards of tourists amble by and gawk.

It’s also in a very pretty part of town.

Right in the middle of the red light district is the no-holds-barred Excalibur Bar, which pumps out heavy metal whilst dispensing voluminous amounts of Jagermeister and beer.

The walls are decorated with motorbikes and suits of armour and it’s a wonderfully rambunctious place to slosh back booze.

The bar closes at 1am in the week (3am on Fridays and Saturdays) so we made a short walk up to the San Francisco nightpub, sadly encountering some daft homophobic twat on the way.

As we walked up to the bar, we encountered a bloke who kept aggressively shouting “flicker” at me. I thought he may have been over enthusiastically promoting his flickr photo account, but in fact he was saying, ‘flikker’ which I later learnt meant ‘faggot’ or ‘queer.’ He was holding a bag of chips at the time, which I was ready to shove in his stupid bigoted face, but wiser council prevailed and I left to attend to another pint.

The doorman at the San Francisco was a real gent and bought us all drinks.
