Berlin photos - station, stickers, squats and gentrification

I enjoyed a week in Berlin back in 2014, and it was great to get the chance to revisit the city recently.

Sadly, it was something of a flying visit, as I was only around for one day to play a show with the Monochrome Set. Here’s some photos from my trip:

Opened in May 2006 and located on the site of the historic Lehrter Bahnhof station, Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in Berlin. []

The station is on multiple levels, with the upper level providing six tracks.

A chilly day in Berlin.

The River Spree runs outside the station.

As we visited in December, there was baubles a-plenty around town.

Catching the tram to our hotel.

We stopped off at Gorki Park Cafe/Bar for some traditional Russian cuisine.

Stickers.

Street art.

Berlin has been hit hard by gentrification, with the eviction of squatters sparking violent demonstrations.

The long-standing squat on Linienstrasse remains.

This photo tell sits own story: right next door to the squat is a luxury fashion store.

Small graveyard by the squat.

‘Sixty Seven Junkfood.’

The Fernsehturm Television Tower dominates the Berlin skyline.

Constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the administration of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), it is the tallest structure in Germany, and the second tallest structure in the European Union at 368 metres high (including antenna).

‘Hipster Pride.’

My kind of street!

We were playing the Roter Salon in Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz.

The interior of the venue was beautiful.

Soundchecking.

My kit for the evening.

In the dining area.

Post show booze up!

This guy had gone drinking with us after our show in Liepzig, so it was great to see him again!

I can’t remember the name of this bar, sorry!

Stickers.

Cafe bar and launderette. Winning combo!

Back at the multi level Berlin Hauptbahnhof station.

I do love a double decker train!

The band wait for the train to our next show at Frankfurt.
