Brixton and Stockwell tube stations to get free wi-fi for the summer

Brixton tube station back in the day - Travelcard hustlers and Special Brew cheerleaders

Both Brixton and Stockwell tube stations will be getting free wi-fi connections the summer, thanks to a deal with Virgin Media which will see a total of 80 London Underground tube platforms hooked up by the end of July.

Compulsive status updaters and Facebook fiends will be able to post at will while waiting for trains at the two stations, although they’ll only be able to take advantage of the connection when they’re within range of the platform base platforms – there’s no wi-fi on the actual trains.

The freebie is only a limited, summer-only offer though. Once the sun cream is put away for the year, the service will only be accessible to Virgin Media broadband and mobile subscribers, although there will be a PAYG option for non-Virgin customers.

Freeloaders will also still be able to get something out of the service, as a free travel info portal will be available, carrying tube updates and basic news and weather reports.
