Brixton station in the steam era (1950s footage)

Filmed in the 1950s, this fascinating amateur-shot footage (below) shows a tantalisingly short glimpse of steam trains thundering through a Brixton station still controlled by mechanical signals.

Located at the western ahead of the station was the signal box and gantry which controlled station movements. The signal box was unusual in construction, being built at street level and then rising up above the adjacent bridge over Brixton Road.

In this view, you can see the Marks & Spencer building to the left, with Bon Marche department store is on the other side of the tracks.

In the wintry station view below (from December 2010), you can see that all trace of the signal box has gone.

A steam train approaches Brixton station from Victoria.
