The death of Our Price records, Brixton Road, Brixton

It almost seems like a distant memory now, but it wasn’t that long ago that you’d find big name record shops on most High Streets around the land – like this view of Our Price Records on Brixton Road in September, 2000.

Brixton pic of the day: a Morris Minor by Electric Avenue

Most blokes may get all doe-eyed and moist in the crotch at the mention of quadruple-camshafted, turbo-spun, rear-view dipsticked, Porsche BigDicks, but this is the car I love the most.

The humble Morris Minor. A proper British car, with bags of style.

Brixton snow: more chilly scenes from south London

Snowy scenes over Brixton, south London, Sunday 5th February 2012

I fear it won’t be around for long, but this morning there was still a fair covering of snow covering Brixton, so I headed out, camera in hand.

My chilly photo tour took me around Coldharbour Lane, Loughborough Park, Brixton Station Road market, Brixton Village, Windrush Square and St Matthew’s church.

The first Brixton snow of 2012 - more to come?

I’ll be the first to admit it’s not exactly the stuff of Arctic legend, but Brixton is currently getting its first snowfall of the year, albeit in the shape of a light dusting of the white stuff.

Lambeth Country Show cancelled for 2012. We fancy a picnic on July 22nd

Brixton listings of gigs, clubs, fairs, fetes and events

We’re hearing terrible news that the annual Lambeth Country Show – a highlight of my year – has been cancelled this year.

The story broke on the urban75 bulletin boards, and it’s now been confirmed: there will be no Country Show this year,  because the Olympics are taking place. Go figure.

Brixton Costa Coffee reveals itself, while a squirrel scuttles about the Barrier Block

Brixton Costa Coffee reveals itself, while a squirrel scuttles about on the 9th floor

I’ve got two completely unrelated Brixton scenes for you today. The first is the sight of the cleaned up brickwork of the old Sanders & Co Jewellers shop on Brixton Road.

The hoardings are slowly coming down in readiness for the opening of a Costa Coffee shop.

Brixton tube station back in the day - Travelcard hustlers and Special Brew cheerleaders

Southbank at dusk: Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery and QE Hall

Seen on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at dusk is this curious boat shaped hotel room designed by David Kohn Architects and Turner Prize-nominated artist Fiona Banner.

Up to two people at a time can spend a night in the room, which is billed as “a place to reflect on the nature of transience”.

A night at the Water Rats, Kings Cross – loads of bands, but not a love of love

January 27th, 2012 2:14pm No comments

An evening of bands at the Monto Water Rats, 328 Grays Inn Road, London, WC1X 8BZ, January 2012

It’s been a while since I’ve visited the Water Rats venue, a smallish live venue some five minutes from Kings Cross station, a short walk down Grays Inn Road.

Now renamed as the Monto Water Rats Theatre,  the venue puts on regular live music events throughout the week.

Cardiff beat Crystal Palace on penalties - the Carling Cup final awaits!

I’ve actually lost my voice from shouting at the mighty Bluebirds for so long tonight, such was the tension in this game.

The away leg at Selhurst Park was nerve-racking enough but watching this vital match was even worse – even though I was only bellowing at the TV screen this time.

Volk’s Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton

Volk's Electric railway and the fabulously eccentric Seaside Railway, Brighton

Although the beautiful West Pier looks unlikely to rise from the depths again, there’s still some quirky attractions to be found around the south coast city of Brighton.
