Costa Coffee gets ready to open in Brixton

The rumours circulated about a Costa Coffee opening up in Brixton back in March last year, and the new banners on the property under the railway bridge on Brixton Road suggest that they’ll be opening for business soon.

Last used for the super-cheapo Homelook store, the space at 458-460 Brixton Road was originally owned by Sanders & Co Jewellers, who opened the store back in 1908.

The firm was eventually taken over by H Samuel, before the store closed in 1984.

The opening of the Costa store reflects the growing gentrification of Brixton and represents yet more homogenisation of the main shopping area. ‘Scuse me if I don’t whoop for joy.

As for me, I’ll be sticking to local independent coffee shops.

Read the full story of the shop here and discuss it here.

  1. Homogenisation, yes. I’m not so sure about gentrification. You find Costa coffees in some pretty run of the mill places these days. I’m not sure they are any more ‘gentrified’ than Tesco or Subway are.

But it’s another corporate outlet on your local high street 🙁
