Ebony Horse Club, Brixton – horse riding for kids in deepest Lambeth

Great to see the new stables up and running for the Ebony Horse Club, a charity set up to “improve the life skills, education and attainment of some of the most disadvantaged children and young people growing up in Brixton, South London.”

Situated on Wyck Gardens, a two-acre strip of land bordered by tower blocks and a railway viaduct,  the centre is just off Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, in one of the most deprived boroughs in the country.

The new centre provides stabling for up to nine horses, giving local kids access to horse riding, outdoor activities and mentoring, and there’s also a riding arena, paddock, picnic area, classroom and changing facilities.

The new stables also mean that children no longer need to be transported to riding centres around London, and membership can be extended beyond the previous restriction of just 40 kids.

An article in the Telegraph from May 2010 reported that two members had already gone on to the British Racing School to train as jockeys.

It also stated that riding lessons were being provided for free for children with parents on benefits, with others only paying £10 a term membership (we weren’t able to check this as their website wasn’t working at the time of writing).
