London at dusk: cranes, flags, Big Ben and the Telecom Tower

London at dusk: cranes, flags and the Telectom Tower

This photo of central London taken from my flat in Brixton had such a nice response after I posted it on Facebook that I thought I’d share it here too.

The handheld photo was taken last night with my Olympus OM-D camera and a 300mm lens (600mm equiv) at ISO 1600 and shows off several London landmarks.

London at dusk: cranes, flags and the Telecom Tower

In this zoomed in view, you can see the Houses of Parliament to the left and the illuminated clock tower to the right (as you can see, the time is 8.55pm).

Everyone calls this tower Big Ben, but it is in fact the Elizabeth Tower, with Big Ben being the heaviest of the five bells it houses. []

  1. Gorgeous pic; your Olympus OM-D has a much better response at ISO 1600 than my Fuji Finepix W3 does. If I tried to take a shot like that, it would be marred by noise.

BTW, does anyone know what the Elizabeth Tower was officially named pre-2012?

  2. I use to have a apartment very near to this tower bridge road top floor every morning I would get up stand on my balcony and enjoy the view regret it every day that I moved

  3. The angles of the BT tower and the two towers of the houses of commons is scrambling my brain a bit as I try to place this. And what is that building between the two? So many cranes as well. I can’t believe how much building is going on there.

    1. I think the skyscraper in the middle distance is the one at the end of Hetherington Road, Clapham. Certainly, if this picture was taken from the Barrier Estate, the position relative to the landmarks in the far distance is about right.

  4. dear editor you say you took the pictures from your flat in Brixton you must own a very expensive bit of gear and yes oswaldtwistle I cant believe how many cranes there are it spoils the out look of London
