Waiting for you to impress passers-by with your devilish topspin action are a host of free table tennis tables, all provided as part of the Ping! project, an initiative to boost recreational table tennis.

The tables have been put up in various parks in London and around the country, thanks to Sport England receiving £250,000 of National Lottery funding to provide tables to non-profit organisations.

The only stipulation being that the tables are free for people to use and enjoy.

“We’d like to see ping-pong tables popping up everywhere – from village greens to university canteens, and city squares to community centres,” enthused Sport England’s Chief Executive, Jennie Price.

“The important thing for any organisation applying for a table is to demonstrate that it will be well used.”

This project first started back in 2010 when a hundred tables were placed across the capital –see some archive photos here.

The photos above were taken in Golden Square, Soho – and, as you can see, the rain didn’t stop these intrepid players!

  1. This is such a great idea. I saw one of these table tennis tables in Camberwell Green, a couple were playing in the rain!

More table tennis in London’s parks and squares would be great. This is just the start! Maybe we’ll have some British world champions soon.
