urban75 supports the Stop Sopa campaign to protect internet freedoms.

January 18th, 2012 12:04pm No comments

What’s being billed as ‘the largest internet protest in history’ is underway today, with websites showing their opposition against the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its sibling the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the US.

In support and solidarity with this important protest, I’ve changed the headers across all the urban75 homepages for the day (see above).

A twilight walk through Times Square, New York

A twilight walk through Times Square, Manhattan, New York, NYC

Once one of the seedier parts of Manhattan, Times Square was cleaned up in the mid-1990s, with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani overseeing the closing of the porno theatres and pressurising the drug dealers and ‘squeegee men’ to relocate elsewhere.

Although it’s been Disneyfied and sanitised into a tourist-friendly cash-till, Times Square is still a fascinating and exciting place to walk through.  Here’s some photos from a December 2010 twilight ramble through the area.

Cardiff Bay – photos around the old Tiger Bay and Cardiff Docks

Cardiff Bay photos, scenes from around the old Tiger Bay and Cardiff Docks, December 2011

For old-time Cardiffians like yours truly, it still seems quite hard to take in the immense changes that have taken place around Cardiff Docks in the past decade or so.

When I was a kid, a trip to the bay invariably involved walking around large tracts of derelict land complemented by a vista of gloopy mud when the tide was out (see pic further down) – and then trying to find somewhere that would serve up a cuppa.
