The Shard and stormy skies over London, as seen from Brixton

There’s some wintry skies over London at the moment, with the nearly finished Shard already dominating the city skyline.
Costa Coffee gets ready to open in Brixton

The rumours circulated about a Costa Coffee opening up in Brixton back in March last year, and the new banners on the property under the railway bridge on Brixton Road suggest that they’ll be opening for business soon.
urban75 supports the Stop Sopa campaign to protect internet freedoms.

What’s being billed as ‘the largest internet protest in history’ is underway today, with websites showing their opposition against the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its sibling the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the US.
In support and solidarity with this important protest, I’ve changed the headers across all the urban75 homepages for the day (see above).
Soho street scenes: Berwick Market and models for hire

End of the day, Berwick market, Soho. The street market was first established in the 18th century but it wasn’t until 1892 that it was officially recognised.
Brixton Offline DJ night, 13th Jan 2012 – some dancefloor photos

After some initial catastrophic equipment failures – to the tune of three borked CD decks and two knackered turntables (!) – things soon got lively at the Prince Albert in Brixton last night, with a full house and a great crowd.
Here’s some photos of the dancefloor action:
Cardiff City vs Crystal Palace, Carling Cup semi-final at Selhurst Road, 10th Jan 2012

There was a lively atmosphere at Selhurst Park for the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final on Tuesday, 10th Jan 2012, with the mighty Cardiff City taking on Crystal Palace.
A twilight walk through Times Square, New York

Once one of the seedier parts of Manhattan, Times Square was cleaned up in the mid-1990s, with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani overseeing the closing of the porno theatres and pressurising the drug dealers and ‘squeegee men’ to relocate elsewhere.
Although it’s been Disneyfied and sanitised into a tourist-friendly cash-till, Times Square is still a fascinating and exciting place to walk through. Here’s some photos from a December 2010 twilight ramble through the area.
Stolen electricity and open air rehearsals: the Rhiwbina Hill sessions, Cardiff

Problem: we’re in a noisy rock band but there’s nowhere to rehearse – and we can’t afford to pay proper studios.
Cunning solution: drive up to an abandoned quarry in north Cardiff and rehearse there for free!
A Sunday selection of six London photos

Here’s a selection of six London photos for your Sunday afternoon delectation, loosely based around the theme “red.”
What have they done to the BT Tower in London?

Despite its Grade II listed status, BT have been allowed to make major changes to the appearance of the iconic BT Tower in central London.
Citing safety reasons, BT has now stripped out all the iconic dishes and horns that were situated along the upper part of the tower.
Bam! Skip lorry smashes into rail bridge on Barrington Road, Brixton

There’s currently delays all round thanks to this skip driver bashing his load of empty skips into the rail bridge at Barrington Road, near Coldharbour Lane, Brixton Sw9.
Cardiff Bay – photos around the old Tiger Bay and Cardiff Docks

For old-time Cardiffians like yours truly, it still seems quite hard to take in the immense changes that have taken place around Cardiff Docks in the past decade or so.
When I was a kid, a trip to the bay invariably involved walking around large tracts of derelict land complemented by a vista of gloopy mud when the tide was out (see pic further down) – and then trying to find somewhere that would serve up a cuppa.
Brixton battered by winter storms of rain and sleet

Man oh man it’s rough out there at the moment, with gale force winds and heavy rain and sleet battering the Brixton streets.
New Year’s Eve party at Brixton Offline – grime, rock’n'roll and lots of drinking

I’m still recovering from our massive New Year’s Eve party at the Prince Albert Brixton with James Pyke playing a superb live set.
Lordy, what a night that was! Here’s some pics of the drunken mayhem:
