Penarth Pier gets thumping big grant from Heritage Lottery Fund

Penarth Pier gets thumping big grant from Heritage Lottery Fund

I spent a fair bit of my childhood summer holidays visiting Penarth (and the nearby Barry Island), so it’s great to hear that the pier and pavilion will be enjoying a substantial £1.65m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Grade II-listed Art Deco seafront pavilion fell into disrepair after being closed to the public some 20 years ago, but spurred on by a 10,000-strong petition, the funding offers an exciting future for the 1929 building.

Once restored, the pavilion will offer a dedicated exhibition area honouring the area’s maritime heritage, while the first-floor balcony will be redesigned to create an auditorium for lectures, conferences and film screenings.

Best of all, there’ll be a new cafe overlooking the seafront.

  1. Lovely post and photos. By coincidence, I heard the news on returning from a weekend at my parents’ home opposite Penarth pier! I’ve written a similar blogpost this evening celebrating the good news.
