Spillers Records, Cardiff – new premises for the oldest record shop in the world

Spillers Records, Cardiff - the oldest record shop in the world, Wales

Established in 1894, Spillers Records in Cardiff can claim to be the oldest record shop in the world – and it’s the place I’ve always visited from the day I was old enough to by records of my own.

Founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller at its original location in Queens Arcade, the shop first specialised in the sale of phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs.

Spiller’s son Edward took over the running of the business in the early 1920s, and, assisted by the popular accordionist and bandleader Joe Gregory, expanded the business to sell musical instruments alongside the pre-recorded music.

In the late 1940s, Henry moved the shop around the corner to larger premises on The Hayes, where they remained until 2010.

A hefty rent rise put the future of Spillers in doubt, but a spirited local campaign to save the shop –  supported by members of the Welsh Assembly, the Manic Street Preachers and Columbia Records – saw the shop successfully moving to temporary premises in the nearby Morgan Arcade.

In 2015, the shop moved again, moving just 20 feet away to new premises at 27 Morgan Arcade, with the new shop sporting a varnished wooden floor, period staircase and bespoke wood racks.

The business has now been in the same family since the 1970s, with daughters Ashli and Grace Todd taking over from their father in 2010. []

The well-travelled  Tom Jones cardboard cut out made the journey to the new shop.

  1. Dear editor I was under the impression that urban 75 was about London we have not had any news about things happening in south /east/ west/ London please sort it you are always ready to defend the barrier block so lets see more about London and not Cardiff

    1. You appear to have missed the text of the site’s homepage and the menu at the top of every single blog post. It includes links to sections entitled: “Brixton – London – New York – Wales..” and more. If you want more news about Brixton and the surrounding area check out my other site http://www.brixtonbuzz.com. Cheers.

  2. Thanks for the good news. I will make a point of buying a record there next time I am in Cardiff. Great memories of choosing records in the 70s.
