Saturday night was a blast at the historic Royal Vauxhall Tavern, an old-fashioned south London pub that is probably London’s best-known alternative gay venue.
On the bill were the fabulous go-go Actionettes, a cowboy stripper called Go Go Harder and the mighty Jarvis Cocker on the decks.
There was a big party going on north of the river last night, with the Actionettes hosting their ‘Night of the Shimmying Dead’ Halloween special at the Buffalo Bar, a basement club right next to Highbury and Islington tube station.
All girl go-go queens, The Actionettes, sent a hugely enthusiastic crowd wild last night at London’s finest gay bar, Duckie.
The club is at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, south London, and describes themselves as, “authentic London honky-tonk purveyors of progressive working class entertainment.” I’d just call it a great night out.
The Offline anti-royal wedding bash at the Stockwell Grosvenor on Thursday was a smash, with zombie brides, massed drummers, a magician and lots of sweet Wills and Kate-shunning rock and roll.
Saturday saw the 10th anniversary party of the all-girl, go-go dancing troupe, The Actionettes at the 100 Club, Oxford Street, London. It was a great party!
This was a fantastic night – the Southbank was packed, the floor sticky with spilt beer and the music was fabulous – any club that plays Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” is A-OK in my book!.
We’ve always been big fans of the folks at the Duckie Club, and we went along to their ‘Gross Indecency’ night in the delightful Camden Centre.
The event took place on the same day as London Gay Pride, and was themed to be an illicit gay club in the early 1960s before the sexual offences bill was passed (this legalied homosexual acts in private for consenting adults over 21).
This was a top night with three-song cover sets by The Loves, Git, Allo Darlin, The Grave Architects and the Escapologists plus a dancing set from the Fabulous Actionettes.
Saturday night’s Actionettes club night at the Buffalo bar by Highbury and Islington was fantastic fun and well worth the tricky journey up north (the Victoria Line was out all day again).
Here’s some pics (unfortunately, I missed The Spivs, who everyone told me were splendid):
