After some initial catastrophic equipment failures – to the tune of three borked CD decks and two knackered turntables (!) – things soon got lively at the Prince Albert in Brixton last night, with a full house and a great crowd.
Here’s some photos of the dancefloor action:

It’s great to see the old Brixton Fridge (now the Electric Brixton) back in business, and last night a charity performance by indie popsters Hard Fi had the place packed out.

Last Thursday we put on an Offline show at Plan B in Brixton with two of my favourite bands, Morton Valence and The Lost Cavalry.
Although it’s not that well known as a live venue, Plan B offers a fantastic live set up, with a large stage, great sound system and superb lighting. And lovely staff too!
Here’s some photos from the gig:

The endless closures and reopenings of the Brixton Fridge have been a source of frustration to Brixtonies who have enjoyed some great nights there, but it is apparently set to open its doors once again in ‘Autumn 2011.’

Wednesday is in danger of turning into the new Thursday (which is apparently already the new Friday) around Brixton town, with some great free nights out on offer.

The Offline anti-royal wedding bash at the Stockwell Grosvenor on Thursday was a smash, with zombie brides, massed drummers, a magician and lots of sweet Wills and Kate-shunning rock and roll.
Oh, and the anarchist bunting looked lovely!
Here’s some photos from the show:

From working at gigs and clubs in a wide variety of capacities, I’ve begun to work out the ‘hierarchy of cool’ in the eyes of punters.
From hard-earned personal experience, I can tell you what are the coolest jobs and the least appreciated jobs – and try not to get too bitter that they’re usually the ones I end up with.
So here’s my top ten, starting with the coolest job of the lot:

It was a big night of rockabilly and rock and roll at the Albert on Friday.
Double bass’s slapped, guitars twanged, whammy bars were wanged and a feast of mean rock and roll and skiffle was slammed out from the stage.

The South London Press may have been getting a bit carried away when they described it as the “party to end all parties,” but as Offline cub nights go, this one was pretty massive!
We had four great live acts, and the place was rammed all night long with a great crowd who knew how to party!

We’ve just got the most amazingly over the top review in the SLP for our big Offline party in Brixton tonight.
The party to end all parties
….part Wild West, past Dickensian London, part Jewish wedding, part 50s rock’n'roll dance… it’s the last remaining bar in a Soviet town, jammed to the rafters with vodka and villains…”

Brixton’s got some awesome venues, and on any just about any given night you can find some great stuff going on.
Last night I checked out the excellent Lost Cavalry at the Brixton Windmill, and then strolled down the hill to check out a new band at the Prince Albert on Coldharbour Lane. It was an ace night!
Here’s some photos:

This was one helluva party!
We had the Silver Brazilians onstage, plus the Actionettes dancing – and the gig was packed all night long.
Here’s a few photos:

Thursday’s Offline Club at Brixton was one of the best for a long time. We had a great line up with the incredible MORTON VALENCE, a massed throng of ukes with the DULWICH UKULELE CLUB, fast-rising hip-hop with LADY LYKEZ and the floor filling skiffle delights of THE SEVERED LIMB – plus underground no-budget independent film screenings with FLIXATION.
Here’s a few pics

And this is why we do it!

More photos here. Next Offline is at the Brixton Albert on November 20th.

Fuck that was fun.
It was like stepping back to old school Brixton, with a selection of curious bands, a fantastically mixed clientele and a great atmosphere.
All that was wrong was the beer prices.
