The honesty boxes of Hay on Wye, Wales

The honesty boxes of Hay on Wye, Wales

Here’s a handful of photos from my trip to Hay on Wye some time ago.

It’s clearly a place full of trusting and honest people because many of the bookshops just had ‘honesty boxes’ provided. Mind you, they can’t be that trusting , because the owners of many of the boxes also saw fit to add, “Note: Boxes emptied daily.”

The going rate seemed to be 50p for hardbacks and 30p for paperbacks.

You’d have to be a right meanie to avoid paying such a small amount for a book.

  1. It would be interesting to know what the honesty percentage is. I must confess whilst unemployed and skint in the early 2000s, I regularly used to short change the honesty box at WHSmith when picking up the Guardian.

I note those honesty boxes aren’t there any more, so it can’t have been just me
