The Old New World: Incredible short film animates 20th century postcard views

This wonderful short movie by Moscow-based photographer and animator Alexey Zakharov entitled The Old New World brings old postcard views into life using clever 3D animation techniques.

The four-minute film sees Zakharov using old black and white views of New York, Boston, Washington, Detroit, Washington D.C. and Baltimore from 1900 and 1940 and animating them into a beautifully evocative film.

Described as ‘photo-based animation project’, Zakharov says it’s a “travel back in time with a little steampunk time machine,” and although he offers no information on how the effects were created, we can image it involved much 3D modelling.  However he did it, I think it’s bloody amazing!

The photos were sourced from the excellent archive photo site shorpy.com and the soundtrack is Al Bowlly – “Guilty.”
