The little known home of rock and roll!
According to the Daily Herald's Archive, this is a picture of the 'first rock n roll club in Britain', at the Crown and Anchor on Brixton Road.
The photo was taken on 4 September 1956.
View of the distinctive pub building facing Brixton Road.
Looking up. Note the crown and anchor motif on the second floor and the flamboyant painted stone urns on the roof.
After the original squatted venue was evicted, the Crown stepped in at the last minute and hosted the @coustic festival 09, featuring Babar Luck, Captain Hotknives, Jay Terrestrial & Chezney, Johnny One Lung, Sarah Bear, Ed Ache and the Granarchist.
Update April 2012: the pub has enjoyed an extensive refit and has reopened as a proper real ale bar. It's well worth a visit.
