Brixton: stores
Here's our slowly growing selection of recommended independent stores and businesses. Drop us a line if you've got any suggestions.

INDEPENDENT SHOPPING:

Fabric shopping

From the traditional (Field Fabrics on Atlantic Road stock beautiful British wools) to the exotic (gorgeous African wax-pattern cottons further up Atlantic Rd). Lots of different outlets around Atlantic Road/Electric Avenue dealing in anything from taffeta to sari silks. Textile fiend heaven.

DIY/Homecare and stuff for shelf builders

Force Homecare 424 Brixton Road, SW9
While it’s a poor substitute for the splendours of the defunct and much-missed Robills, the ground floor offers a comprehensive array of household goods (bleach, mops, kettles, silk lanterns, beaded curtains, indoor water features…). Meanwhile, the Hardware Basement is essential for that ill-thought-out Sunday DIY project that requires loads of tools and fixings you don’t have.

Station Road DIY Brixton Station Road, SW9PHOTO
Old-school, cheap'n'cheerful D-I-Y store on the market.

Furniture

Clued-up classics recycled at Modes on Brixton Hill and Bleu, on Coldharbour Lane near the Juice Bar (with prices to match unfortunately). Excellent second-hand/house-clearance outlets all the way up on both sides of Brixton Hill from Josephine Ave to Streatham Bus Station.

General

Morley's 472-488 Brixton Road SW9
Clarins in SW9! Plus lovely, reasonably-priced plus-size clothes for women on the first floor (my Mum loves it in there), fashionable concessions on the ground floor (FCUK etc), and a great 'Cook Shop' in the basement.

Brixton Wholefoods 59 Atlantic Road, SW9
Excellent, long-established co-op health food store. Recommended, despite the notoriously grumpy owner.

Brixton Cycles 145 Stockwell Rd SW9PHOTO
Fantastic, friendly workers co-op, selling and repairing cycles. Open 9am - 6pm on Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri and Sat, 10am - 7pm on Thurs.

Gubbins 179 Ferndale Road, SW9
'Head shop' for smokers, selling pipes, bongs, smoking accessories, herbal highs etc

Joy Coldharbour Lane, SW9PHOTO
Quirky NYC-Soho style shop selling an eclectic mix of clothes, novelty items and gifts.

Majestical Lips 86 Atlantic Road SW9
Friendly shop selling Rasta paraphenalia, smoking accessories and hats.
website

Rosie's 14e Market Row SW9
This stylish, small new deli in Brixton Market (formerly Granville Arcade) offers a sumptious range of farmhouse cheeses, olives, boquerones and organic bread. Also serves fresh coffee and lunch.
