Southend Utd 1 Cardiff City 1 (13.01.01)
City nearly make it 2-0 late in the second half
Cardiff battle but come unstuck by a last minute equaliser

Boy, was this game a battle. On a gloriously sunny winter's afternoon, we witnessed an incredibly tight game in the toytown surroundings of Southend's 'intimate' mini-stadium.

In a game where both teams made plenty of chances, it looked like Cardiff would be gifted the lead when Gavin Gordon was brought down by ex-City Searle in the penalty area, but Kevin Evan's feeble strike was easily saved.

Disappointment quickly turned to delight three minutes later when Leo Fortune-West slammed home from ten yards, with the ball being supplied by one of Legg's trademark uber-throw-ins.

During the second half, the City crowd were in fine voice, shaming the silent home crowd, and City needed all the encouragement they could get as Southend launched onslaught after onslaught on goal for long periods.

It looked like City had ridden the storm as the clock ticked away (and thanks to some fine saves from Walton), but an awful blunder by Rhys Weston thumped the ball into his own net ball with seconds to go.

Still, an away draw isn't that bead - and we we got to enjoy a great day out at the seaside with chips and beers!
