Carter USM at the Brixton Academy

What a terrific night that was! The place was *rammed*, the atmosphere brilliant and the light show was stupendous!

Nipsla and I were DJing the after show party at JAMM, which turned out to to be truly epic. But the hangover today. oh dear.me 'ead!

Offline Club, Brixton Dogstar - photos

Thursday's Offline Club at Brixton was one of the best for a long time. We had a great line up with the incredible MORTON VALENCE, a massed throng of ukes with the DULWICH UKULELE CLUB, fast-rising hip-hop with LADY LYKEZ and the floor filling skiffle delights of THE SEVERED LIMB - plus underground no-budget independent film screenings with FLIXATION.

Here's a few pics

And this is why we do it!

Endorse It Festival 2009 delivers!

Just got back from a fantastic weekend at the Endorse It Festival. In Dorset. See what they did there?

Dreadful puns aside, the festival was an absolute treat. The weather was perfect, the cider flowed plentifully and there were loads of chums about to ensure that it remains my favourite festival of the year.

Here's a few photos. More to come later.

Our well populated swimming pool!

A curious bout of medieval dancing broke out during my ska set.

Atomic Suplex at Offline

After a great day drinking Chucklehead cider at the Lambeth Country Show (photo report coming soon), I was definitely in the mood for the rivet-removing full-on rockandroll of Atomic Suplex.

And they kicked ass in industrial quantities, entertaining one of the most bonkers crowds seen at Offline for quite a while.

It's been a long weekend of partying with four great acts playing the Offline Albert gigs.

On Friday we had superb Kitchener and our favourite hip-hop act - Lady Lykez. She's lively, funny and talented and definitely one to watch.

On Saturday, we put on the hilarious Mr B, The Gentleman Rhymer who mixed up chappage with hip hop, followed by John Peel faves I, Ludicrous.

There's not so many photos for this night as I'd suffered some hideous flu-like ailment overnight. It was so bad I had to run off during the soundcheck for a Mr Creosote-style chunder (without the need for a wafer thin mint). Eeeugh.

Happily, the excellent entertainment took my mind off things before I headed home early to bed.

Offline Dogstar Launch Party: Massive!

Ruddy hell, that was a busy one! The Brixton Dogstar was rammed to capacity for the return of the Offline club night on Thursday.

We were running three rooms on two floors, with live acts in all three and at times it was so busy getting from room to room was quite a challenge.

The bill was one of the best I've ever put on, with some great live acts, poets, bands, drummers and dancers. Here's the Actionettes doing their hip shaking stuff.

The fabulous Barking Bateria put in another thunderous set in the packed upstairs Ballroom.

The night's success had been helped by quite a bit of press in the week before. Time Out ran an interview with yours truly (they'd asked for an 'action' DJ shot, but I explained that seeing as DJing usually involved me messing about and having a beer, they may as well use this one):

The South London Press also ran a good feature on the night:

I'm off to the football now (come on Cardiff!), but I'll post up more photos from the club night tomorrow.

Amazing Feats Of Loneliness, Jonathan Richman

Last week we went to the Soho Theatre to see Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness - and loved every minute of it.

A bit like Ripping Yarns meets the Mighty Boosh meets The League of Gentlemen, the show is set as a Victorian travelling sideshow, with Mr Gant recalling fantastic tales from his travels.

Here's how the press blurb describes the show:

In 1881, one of the Victorian theatres most enigmatic impresarios, Mr Edward Gant, presented his famed travelling show for the very last time. In 2009, Anthony Neilson and Headlong Theatre are proud to present a reconstruction of this historic and extraordinary evening of mystery and magic, spectacle and strangeness. Behold . . . The Amazing Feats Of Loneliness!

Anthony Neilson is one of Britain's most acclaimed playwrights, creating pioneering, taboo-breaking new work in a bold and compassionate way. Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Loneliness is a beautiful and very funny exploration of performance and performers, of sadness, mortality and wonder.

It's a wonderful, funny and entertaining show with quite a dark twist at the end - if Victorian melodrama is your thing, get down to the Soho Theatre before the run ends!

Jonathan Richman at the Borderline

Last Tuesday, I was lucky enough to be offered a ticket for Jonathan Richman at the small west end venue of the Borderline (thanks ianw!).

Once again he put in a superb show, stuffed full of wit, humour and youthful enthusiasm - it really is hard to believe that he was born just six years after the end of World War 2!

Trans Siberian March Band + Jarmean at Offline

I'm still beastly hungover from last night's immense Offline show - both bands were absolutely fantastic and the place was heaving again.

The crowd was, as ever, well up for a good time. Here's a few pics from the night - more coming soon!

We've got some great Offline nights coming up - April 3rd is both Offline's 5th birthday party and my own (slightly bigger) birthday, so we're putting on something really special at the Albert.

Also on the bill was the hilarious MATTHEW DEVEREAUX, the roof-removing thunder of ATOMIC SUPLEX, the melodramatic brilliance of THE BRIDPORT DAGGER and my personal favourites, AMYCANBE, who played a set of seductive indie-folk goodness.
