Empire State, New York

I remember the sheer exhilaration I felt when I finally caught a glimpse of this building through the congestion of the New York skyline

For years, I'd seen this American icon on films and TV programmes and it felt so good to be finally there. Prefab Sprout's "Hey Manhattan!" and a host of Frank Sinatra songs buzzed through my head as I grew closer to the building.

Unfortunately, the nearer I got the more hideously touristy things became - such is the way of most attractions these days.

In the end I couldn't be bothered to join the herd of camera-snapping hordes and go the top, but the thrill of finally making it to New York remains in this picture.
