Astor Place cube

An East Village institution since it was placed in Astor Place in 1968, this rotating sculpture ('The Alamo' by Bernard Rosenthal) has proved a magnet to skaters, punks and goths.

In 2003, pranksters turned it into a Rubik's cube while students made their own cube after the original was sent off for repair in March 2005.
