Formerly known as Kennington Common, the park has a rich history. Criminals were hung here (until 1799) and Charles Wesley preached in front of 50,000+ crowds in 1739.
Many historians attribute the birth of modern democracy to the great Chartist rally here in April 1842 and the park continues to serve as a focus for protest and social activism.
