Cardiff at Christmas: 25 photos of bars, football, trains and street scenes, December 2025

I was briefly back in my hometown of Cardiff for part of Christmas and grabbed these photos from  my wanders around town.

This 200 year old chapel had remained hidden inside the House of Fraser/Howells department store until redevelopment work started on the Grade II-listed building in 2023.

Busker sets up on Queen Street.

Birchgrove station at night.

A resurgent Cardiff City were playing at home on Boxing Day, defeating Exeter City to remain top of the league.

Legendary Scotland manager Jock Stein suffered a fatal heart attack at Ninian Park in 1985 mas his team secured a draw against Wales to earn a World Cup place.

A team of determined divot destroyers take to the hallowed turf before kick off.

Pie of the month!

A crowd of 22,291 watched the game.

The Valleys trains have finally received some decent investment, with lines electrified and new rolling stock replacing knackered old diesel trains.

Here a train almost appears to be levitating into Rhiwbina station.

Hitting the Brains at the Old Arcade.

Butchers Arms in Rhiwbina was rammed.

Protest on Queen Street.

The Castle Arcade has had something of an  upgrade since I last visited with dining spaces flanking the walkway.

The superb Queens Vaults on Westgate Street.

The Principality Stadium dominates the city centre.

Knackered old house in Canton.

In late 2023, the Churchill Way dock feeder canal that had remained hidden for over 70 years was uncovered, ready to be incorporated into a new Canal Quarter in the city.

The striking frieze above the entrance to Boots on Queen Street.

It’s still not fixed! Here’s what I wrote about the Cardiff Market clock back in December 2015:

Despite being restored in 2011 at a cost of £25,000, the H. Samuel Everite Time clock remains without the hands that disappeared some time after 2007 – and it’s been a long time since the neon letters were illuminated.
