Promising to take visitors “on a breathtaking journey through the cosmos, from dazzling galaxies to the edge of a black hole,” Smithsonian Starstruck is a virtual reality adventure currently showing at the Science Museum in London
Before you strap on your VR headset you’re invited to add your name. When you enter your virtual space world, whoever you’re with will see your name floating above your avatar.
And if you’re childish like me, you’ll invent a silly name.
This is the room where all the action takes place. You’ll receive instructions on how to use your VR headset before being sent off into virtual space.
Small groups are guided through a 40 minute adventure, and your companions will appear as ghostly outlines in your headset.
As for the actual experience, it was enjoyable but not without some flaws: at times it didn’t seem sure whether to fill your head with science data or just go for some whizz-bang graphics.
There was some genuinely fascinating sights to admire, but some concentration was needed at times to take it all in.
After the exhibition you can enjoy the free Space gallery at the Science Museum.
