Thursday\u00a0nights\u00a0around Brixton are\u00a0usually\u00a0my\u00a0favourite.\u00a0Thursdays are civilised and fun.<\/p>\n

Come Friday and\u00a0Brixton\u00a0invariably groans to wobbling hordes of braying pissheads, ‘collars-up’ laaads on the pull and over-confident. excessively loud moneyed types up from the\u00a0suburbs.<\/p>\n

That’s not to say that there’s not some great\u00a0nights\u00a0to be found over the weekend – what can be better than 30 samba drummers playing tonight for free<\/a>?! – but Thursdays are often where it’s at for\u00a0socialising\u00a0with locals.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

First stop was the Prince Albert, and then I popped next door to check out one of Brixton’s undiscovered gems: the live ska\/jazz nights at Club 414<\/a>. Here’s where you’ll find some fantastic musicians in an old-school Brixton\u00a0\u00a0atmosphere.<\/p>\n

On the small stage was some superb steel pan playing, evoking a warm\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0vibe on a chilly November\u00a0evening.<\/p>\n

The 414\u00a0live\u00a0music\u00a0nights on Thursdays are not for well-oiled all-night party\u00a0people\u00a0though – at this club you’re expected to listen to and appreciate the\u00a0bands,\u00a0not shout over them or stand in front of the stage updating your\u00a0Facebook\u00a0status.<\/p>\n

It’s one my favourite nights in Brixton.<\/p>\n

It has to be said that weekends at the Dogstar can be a bit much for some, with the place jam-packed with people keen to\u00a0extract\u00a0the maximum party potential out of every minute of the night.\u00a0It’s not my kind of crowd, but I really like Thursdays here.<\/p>\n

The staff are lovely and the DJ plays a good mix of tunes, although I wish he’d lose his annoying <\/strong>predilection of cutting out the bass EQ for eight bars of almost every\u00a0single\u00a0ruddy track he plays.<\/p>\n

It may sound suitably dramatic when the bass comes roaring back in, but the\u00a0preceding\u00a0bout of screeching\u00a0treble\u00a0is not a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

On Thursdays at the Dog, there’s room to move on the dance floor, and you get served quicker too. And that’s a win in anyone’s book!<\/p>\n

Heading down Coldharbour Lane, looking back into the centre of town. On the right is Brixton Village<\/a> (formerly\u00a0Granville\u00a0Arcade).<\/p>\n

It’s acquired the nickname of ‘The Villaaage<\/em>‘ amongst some locals, on account of its rapidly changing, upwardly mobile client\u00e8le on weekends.<\/p>\n

The depressing face of nu-Brixton.<\/p>\n

Bedecked in a\u00a0ludicrous\u00a0‘edgy’ typeface, this Barratt Homes\u00a0development called\u00a0‘Brixton\u00a0Square<\/a>‘ implies that it’s going to contain some public space. It won’t. It’s a gated community.<\/p>\n

Designed\u00a0like a bland office block and of no\u00a0architectural\u00a0merit\u00a0whatsoever, the cheapest one bedroom flat in this development will set you back \u00a3265,000, putting it way out of reach of most locals. \u00a0The cheapest rent is likely to be \u00a316,000\/year for a one bedroom flat.<\/p>\n

The Angel pub<\/a>, thankfully now repainted after being\u00a0covered\u00a0in unsightly graffiti<\/a> as part of an ‘art’ piece.<\/p>\n

Bought by uber-rich\u00a0property\u00a0developers\u00a0Lexadon, most of the building will be turned into\u00a0upmarket\u00a0flats and there’s little\u00a0prospect\u00a0of anything remotely\u00a0resembling\u00a0the original pub<\/a> coming back.
