I’ve been a huge fan of the ‘Boris\u00a0Bikes’ cycle hire scheme in London, but am\u00a0disheartened\u00a0to see the huge increase in fees coming next year.<\/p>\n

Fees doubled<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Wednesday 2 January 2013,\u00a0access fees for the Barclays Cycle Hire are doubling across the board – something that will no doubt deter some\u00a0casual\u00a0cyclists from renewing\u00a0their\u00a0membership.<\/p>\n

Here’s how the new charges will look.\u00a0If you’ve got auto\u2011renew set up on your account, the new fees will automatically kick in from 1 January 2013.<\/p>\n

24 hour access will increase from \u00a31 to \u00a32
\nWeekly access will increase from \u00a35 to \u00a310
\nAnnual membership will increase from \u00a345 to \u00a390<\/p>\n

After hiring a bike, the first thirty minutes of use will still be free. All other usage charges and additional charges including late return, non return and bicycle damage will not change.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’ve paid the\u00a0annual\u00a0membership\u00a0for the past two years, but at \u00a390, it’s suddenly not looking so attractive. Surely the whole\u00a0point\u00a0of this scheme was to\u00a0encourage more people to take up cycling, not price them out.<\/p>\n
