Sad to say, they seem to be getting\u00a0meaner\u00a0and meaner with every year.<\/p>\n<p>Above is the rather curious windmill\/reindeer combo that can be found marooned in an expanse of concrete in Windrush Square.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-04.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brixton Village\/Granville Arcade has made a rather fine effort this year, with some rather lovely understated decorations hanging above the Avenues.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-22.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-05.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-06.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not even a hint of festive cheer to be found on Brixton&#8217;s Electric Avenue &#8211; a\u00a0street\u00a0that was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/features\/christmas-2006.html\" target=\"_blank\">once famed for its elaborate Christmas decorations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-07.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the equally bleak view from the Atlantic Road end.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-17.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0least\u00a0some of the shopkeepers had made some effort!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-09.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Christmas\u00a0lights on the flower seller stall opposite the tube station.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-11.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Morleys can always be relied upon to put up a rather splendid traditional tree, even if the Council&#8217;s effort get less and less festive with\u00a0each\u00a0passing year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-19.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something of a shame that a great big tacky sign advertising nail and waxing treatments seems to be\u00a0permanently\u00a0stuck in front of the tree.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-10.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lights on the trees by Morleys.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-12.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Those little triangles of LED lights are as good as it gets on Brixton Road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-08.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-13.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s face it. It&#8217;s not looking very festive at all in the centre of Brixton, is it?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-14.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the Windmill decoration, plonked opposite the Town Hall and surrounded by railings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-16.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty grim scenario on Windrush Square &#8211; surely it couldn&#8217;t have been too much trouble to sling some lights on the big tree opposite the Ritzy. Note one of the market cats in the foreground being camera-shy!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-21.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hanging baubles opposite Ralph&#8217;s Gift Box. Let&#8217;s hope the shop is still here next year, but with rents rising through the roof, many residents are fearful for the\u00a0future\u00a0of the\u00a0traditional\u00a0stores in the market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixton-xmas-lights-2012-23.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights around Brixton town centre, December 2012, London, England UK\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Decorations by Nour Cash &amp; Carry,\u00a0another\u00a0store that is under threat.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s still two weeks until Christmas, so maybe some new decorations may appear, but at the moment, it&#8217;s looking about as\u00a0parsimonious\u00a0as I can recall.<\/p>\n<p>But looking on the bright side, at least we haven&#8217;t been burdened with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-christmas-cash-in-continues-as-london-drips-in-tacky-festive-themed-advertising-tat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marmite decorations<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my review of the Christmas lights seen around Brixton.
