Seen covered over in\u00a0plastic\u00a0sheeting and bound in gaffa tape is the statue of King\u00a0George\u00a0II, in Golden Square<\/a>, central London.<\/p>\n

There’s an\u00a0interesting\u00a0story behind this statue, as no one is absolutely certain\u00a0whether\u00a0it represents King George II or King Charles II.<\/p>\n

Folklore has it that the statue was accidentally won at auction, after the unwitting bidder raised his hand to greet a friend.<\/p>\n

The statue had gone under the hammer for so little that the accidental bidder didn’t bother\u00a0contesting\u00a0what had happened and decided to give the\u00a0the statue as a gift to the people of Golden Square [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n

Opposite the statue can be found the rather\u00a0splendid Nordic\u00a0Bakery<\/a> which serves cinnamon buns to die for and, until recently, the square hosted the long-serving Footes music store<\/a>.<\/p>\n
