On the weekend, I caught the last day of the\u00a0Shoot! Existential Photography exhibition at the Photographers Gallery in central London.<\/p>\n

\"Shoot!<\/p>\n

It was an interesting idea for an\u00a0exhibition, which traced the\u00a0history of a curious fairground attraction that first appeared at the end of\u00a0\u00a0World War I.<\/p>\n

Known as the ‘photographic shooting gallery’, it rewarded sharp shooting punters who hit the target with\u00a0a snapshot of him or herself in the act of shooting.<\/p>\n

The exhibition traces the history of this sideshow, and\u00a0includes sixty images of a particularly dedicated contestant,\u00a0Ria van Dijk, who took portraits of herself from 1936 onwards.<\/p>\n

Less impressive to me was the work by the\u00a0artist Rudolf Steiner, who produced images created by literally\u00a0shooting a bullet into his camera.<\/p>\n

A photographic\u00a0shooting\u00a0gallery had been set up giving sharp-eyed shooters the\u00a0opportunity to take their own portraits.<\/p>\n

Stairs. Lots of them. Any visit to the Photographers Gallery these days involves a lot of\u00a0trooping\u00a0up and down the things.<\/p>\n

Boy, do I miss the old Great Newport Street gallery in Leicester Square and its lovely, friendly cafe.<\/p>\n

I preferred it when all the exhibitions were free too (although modestly priced at \u00a32, any kind of admission price takes away from the inviting ‘open-house’ pop-in feel of the gallery to me)<\/p>\n

I rather liked this arrangement of\u00a0electronic\u00a0gizmos and emergency devices in the gallery.<\/p>\n
