{"id":1094,"date":"2010-03-15T14:32:04","date_gmt":"2010-03-15T14:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=1094"},"modified":"2021-02-24T13:59:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-24T13:59:02","slug":"london-razor-skyscraper-packs-wind-turbines-bladerunner-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/london-razor-skyscraper-packs-wind-turbines-bladerunner-style\/","title":{"rendered":"London Razor skyscraper packs wind turbines, Bladerunner-style (update)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wirefresh.com\/images\/strata-razor-london-skyscraper2.jpg\" alt=\"London Razor - high tech skyscraper with built in turbines\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking like it&#8217;s sprouted from the set of Bladerunner is London&#8217;s newest high-rise apartment block, the &#8216;Razor.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The 148 metre-tall high-tech tower will feature built-in wind turbines &#8211; a world first &#8211; and they&#8217;re expected to generate 50MWh annually, adding up to 8% of the building&#8217;s electricity needs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Standing next to the grim <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/vista\/elephant.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elephant and Castle roundabout<\/a> and the decidedly dodgy Heygate estate in <em>sarf Landahn<\/em>, it&#8217;s an unlikely location for such an innovative building, which is officially called the Strata tower.<\/p>\n<p>The three 9m-diameter, five bladed turbines will be installed 43 storeys up at the top of the tower next month, and are capable of 35mph gusts, courtesy of what&#8217;s known as the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venturi_effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Venturi effect<\/a>.&#8217; This (apparently) sucks in air in from many angles and accelerates it through the tubes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/razor-strata-turbine-skyscraper-2.jpg\" alt=\"London Razor - high tech skyscraper with built in turbines\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The design has been described as &#8216;Marmite architecture&#8217; by Justin Black, director for the developers, Brookfield:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The brief we gave to Hamilton&#8217;s Architects was we wanted a statement, we wanted to create benchmarks for sustainability and urban living. We wanted something bold, we wanted remarkable. It&#8217;s what I term Marmite architecture \u2013 you either love it or you hate it, there&#8217;s no in between.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Costing a cool \u00a3113m and targeted at the well-heeled (the 408 apartments start at \u00a3230,000 and soar upwards to a<em> gor-blimey<\/em> \u00a32.5m each), the tower is part of a \u00a31.5bn project to regenerate the Elephant and Castle area.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been watching the tower&#8217;s construction from our office and rather like the look of the thing &#8211; at least it&#8217;s got a touch of pizazz about it.<\/p>\n<p>London major &#8220;Bumbling&#8221; Boris Johnson is expected to open the building on 1 July, if all goes to plan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/london\/images\/razor-strata-turbine-skyscraper-1.jpg\" alt=\"London Razor - high tech skyscraper with built in turbines\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Update:\u00a0 The Strata tower has been awarded the &#8216;Carbuncle Cup&#8217; as Britain&#8217;s ugliest new building, with the 42-storey building in Elephant &amp; Castle being\u00a0 nominated for its &#8216;plain visual grotesqueness&#8217; and &#8216;Philishave stylings.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/artanddesign\/2010\/aug\/12\/strata-tower-britains-ugliest-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> reported on the prize:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Decked out with Philishave stylings, this is a building that appears to be auditioning for a supporting role in a James Bond title sequence,&#8221; said Ellis Woodman of Building Design, the trade newspaper which organised the prize.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The building was nominated by The Georgian Group for its &#8220;plain visual grotesqueness&#8221;.
