Running between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks, the Emirates Air Line\u00a0cable car across the River Thames was opened on the 28th June 2012 and is operated by Transport for London.<\/p>\n

A journey across the river costs \u00a33.20 for\u00a0Oyster or Travelcard users, or \u00a34.30 cash (\u00a31.60\/\u00a32.20\u00a0child\u00a0fares, respectively) and\u00a0represents\u00a0fantastic value for money – it’s a\u00a0wonderful\u00a0journey!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

Costing a cool \u00a360m to build, the service runs\u00a034 gondolas, each with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers.<\/p>\n

The system uses\u00a0Monocable Detachable Gondola (MDG) technology, which has just a single cable for both propulsion and support.\u00a0It’s perhaps best not to look up when you’re 50-odd metres above the water as that cable can start to look awfully<\/em> thin!<\/p>\n

The cable car provides a crossing every 15 seconds and carry up to 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction, although recent reports say that it’s currently running at less than 10% of capacity.<\/p>\n

Situated next to the Millennium Dome , the\u00a0sculpture is (surprisingly) taller than Gormley’s famous Angel of the North at 30m high and is constructed from a collection of tetrahedral units made from 1.5\u00a0m long sections of steel.<\/p>\n

\"Crystal<\/p>\n

There’s not an awful lot to do around Royal Docks, but there is a nice cafe – the\u00a0Crystal Cafe – which is part of an interesting Crystal exhibition space.<\/a><\/p>\n

We went for a walk up to Canning Town<\/a> – one of my old stomping grounds – and it had to be said that the place hasn’t aged too well.<\/p>\n

Cable car controversy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Thames cable car has been described as\u00a0the\u00a0most expensive gondola\/cable car ever built<\/a>, with the Gondola Project being particularly damning about the high cost of construction:<\/p>\n

As we discuss\u00a0here<\/a>, the London Thames Cable Car appears to be nothing more than the latest example of largely English-speaking transit agencies\u2019 unwillingness and\/or inability to reign in costs related to transit projects.<\/p>\n

Whether this is an example of\u00a0scope creep,\u00a0pork barrelling,\u00a0corruption\u00a0or just pure out-and-out\u00a0incompetence\u00a0is virtually irrelevant at this point because all or some clearly have a role to play in this debacle.<\/p>\n

As someone who happens to know a little bit about cable transit systems, let be me completely blunt:\u00a0There is absolutely, positively, completely no reason whatsoever this project should cost London taxpayers ~$100m USD. Not a single good reason.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
