{"id":13109,"date":"2013-08-16T10:30:44","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T09:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=13109"},"modified":"2013-08-16T10:38:49","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T09:38:49","slug":"penarth-pier-and-the-restored-pavilion-in-pictures-south-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/penarth-pier-and-the-restored-pavilion-in-pictures-south-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Penarth Pier and the restored Pavilion in pictures, South Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of Penarth Pier and pavilion, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, September 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/penarth-cardiff-2013-07.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opening in 1895 in response to the\u00a0growing popularity of the nearby beach and to service the lively ferry trade to Cardiff, Penarth Pier on the South Wales coast stands\u00a050 feet (230 m) long.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of Penarth Pier and pavilion, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, September 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/penarth-cardiff-2013-16.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After being sold to the council in 1929,\u00a0a new concrete landing stage was built at the seaward end, followed by a delightful Art Deco pavilion at the shoreward end,<\/p>\n<p>Used as a venue for traditional seaside entertainment and a concert hall, the building fell into disrepair over the years, but\u00a0a 2009 Heritage Lottery Fund led to a \u00a33.9m refurbishment scheme which is scheduled to be completed by September 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The restoration will see the pavilion being used as a cinema, cafe, observatory and multi-purpose community complex.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photos of Penarth Pier and pavilion, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, September 2013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/penarth-cardiff-2013-17.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Work looks near completion on the roof &#8211;
