photo feature\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lavernock-point-02.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Located high on the south Wales coastline between Penarth and Barry can be found the remains of the\u00a0Lavernock Battery and Fort.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in 1870, the gun battery was built by the Royal Commission and sported three 7&#8243; muzzle loading cannons designed to protect the busy channel approaches to Cardiff and Bristol shipyards.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Remains of Lavernock Fort gun emplacement, south Wales - photo feature\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lavernock-point-03.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Around fifteen years later, the gun battery was reinforced with a fourth cannon, but this turned out to be a short lived upgrade, with all four guns being replaced in 1903 by two rapid fire six inch (152 mm) former naval guns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Remains of Lavernock Fort gun emplacement, south Wales - photo feature\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lavernock-point-09.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the advent of the Second World War, extra protection from\u00a0air and sea attack\u00a0\u00a0was needed for convoy vessels\u00a0while they waited for the tide or\u00a0unloading berths to become available.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Remains of Lavernock Fort gun emplacement, south Wales - photo feature\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/lavernock-point-05.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the Atlantic shipping convoy de-grouping zone being located between Cardiff, Barry and Flat Holm,\u00a0two unit searchlight battery were added to the armoury as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/humanities.uwe.ac.uk\/bhr\/Main\/ww2\/3_15.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Fixed Defences, Severn Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Remains of Lavernock Fort gun emplacement, south Wales -
