A grey and wet St Katherine’s Dock. The old docks (now a swishy marina) took their name from the former hospital of St Katharine’s by the Tower which was built in the 12th century.<\/p>\n

The whole area was rebuilt in the 1820s, with engineer Thomas Telford’s scheme seeing the construction of\u00a0new docks with two\u00a0linked basins. Adjacent warehouses were built by\u00a0by the\u00a0architect\u00a0Philip Hardwick.<\/p>\n

Blasted to smithereens during WW2, the docks eventually closed in 1968 and sold off to the Greater London Council.\u00a0Most of the original warehouses were demolished and replaced by modern commercial buildings in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n

This mallet-wielding goldbeater’s arm can be found above a doorway at\u00a0Goldbeater’s House, Manette Street, \u00a0on\u00a0the side of\u00a0Foyle’s bookshop on Charing Cross Road.<\/p>\n

The original sign was donated to the Dickens museum in Doughty Street, \u00a0but this replica marks the premises of an old Victorian workshop, where large\u00a0cast iron mallets were used beat out ribbons of gold into wafer-thin strips of gold leaf.<\/p>\n
