Located in the heart of Cardiff’s city centre is this wonderful indoor market, selling a wide variety of\u00a0fresh produce, cooked food, delicacies, vinyl records<\/a> and all manner of useful household items.<\/p>\n

D<\/span>esigned by the Borough Surveyor,\u00a0William Harpur, the two floor market opened in May 1891, and stands on the site\u00a0<\/span>of Cardiff gaol (the gallows where Dic Penderyn<\/a>\u00a0was hung on 13 August 1831\u00a0were located on the site of the current\u00a0St. Mary Street\u00a0entrance).<\/p>\n

Accessible via entrances on\u00a0\u00a0St. Mary Street, Trinity Street and an alleyway off Church Street, the\u00a0market has two shopping levels; a large ground floor area and a balcony level\u00a0running across all four sides of the hall.<\/p>\n

Since 1975 the building has been\u00a0listed\u00a0and is currently Grade II.<\/p>\n

Ashton’s<\/a> have traded in the market since 1866 and the strong whiff of fish as you enter the Trinity Street entrance is something you won’t forget in a hurry.<\/span><\/p>\n

The market ground floor contains four aisles, and you can see the\u00a0raised market superintendent’s office – complete with clock tower – in the centre of this photo.<\/p>\n

Since 1910, a large H. Samuel clock has dominated the High Street entrance. The current clock built by \u00a0<\/span>Smith of Derby<\/a>\u00a0dates from 1963 and was\u00a0<\/span>apparently restored in 2011 at\u00a0a cost of \u00a325,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hands (that were in situ in 2007<\/a>) appear to have vanished. and I’m not sure if the letters still light up in red neon.<\/p>\n
