the\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">KOSMICA session at the South Bank last week proved to be a\u00a0<\/span>fascinating experience &#8211; and I got to smell the Moon!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-01.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event took place in the\u00a0Bargehouse in the\u00a0Oxo Tower Wharf as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/artscatalyst.org\/projects\/detail\/republic_of_the_moon_london\" target=\"_blank\">Republic of the Moon exhibition<\/a> programme.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-02.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Liliane Lijn<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em>moonmeme<\/em>\u00a0explored the repeating cycle of the Moon\u2019s phases, projecting the word &#8216;SHE&#8217;, on to a real-time animation of the Moon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-03.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Paterson<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Earth\u2013Moon\u2013Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon)<\/em>\u00a0used a form of radio transmission to beam\u00a0Beethoven&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Moonlight Sonata<\/em>\u00a0onto the moon in Morse code.<\/p>\n<p>The signal was then reflected back to earth from the surface of the Moon, but because some of the data was absorbed in its shadows and \u2018lost\u2019 in its craters, only a fragmented score returned.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The automated piano played back the new score, with gaps and absences becoming intervals\u00a0and rests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-04.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Artwork from a project devised by the students at Srishti School of Arts, Bangalore, India, with artist Joanna Griffin<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-05.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shopping trolley for Moon rocks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-06.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I really liked<strong> Leonid Tishkov<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Private Moon<\/em>\u00a0which featured an illuminated physical &#8216;private Moon&#8217; and photos of its journey across dramatic locations around the world.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-07.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-08.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-09.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Full Moon party was a one-off event above the main exhibition and featured talks by\u00a0Tomas Saraceno,\u00a0WE COLONISED THE MOON,\u00a0Kevin Fong, Jill Stuart, Dr Lucie Green and a live music performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomassaraceno.com\/\">Saraceno<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0chaotic talk and slide show was wonderfully eccentric, funny and engaging, and centred around\u00a0his ideas for cities built in the air.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-12.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-10.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Collectively known as &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wecolonisedthemoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">We Colonised the Moon<\/a>,&#8217;\u00a0Sue Corke and Hagen Betzwieser presented &#8216;the largest Moon smelling session ever done on our planet.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Based on the descriptions of the smell of Moon dust by\u00a0Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke, the balloons were filled with the scent, and we were invited to prick the balloons on cue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-11.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; it was kind of sweet and metallic &#8211; and it lingered for several hours later.<\/p>\n<p>This afforded me the opportunity to appear positively unhinged in the pub later as I invited people to &#8220;Smell The Moon on my hair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KOSMICA: Full Moon Party, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London, 16th January 2014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/full-moon-party-kosmica-arts-catalyst-13.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rounding off the night was a short live set by\u00a0Orchestra Elastique, who performed a soundtrack to Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s&#8217;\u00a0\u00a01902 seminal silent film, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Trip_to_the_Moon\" target=\"_blank\">A trip to the Moon<\/a>&#8221;
