{"id":1409,"date":"2010-04-14T14:23:20","date_gmt":"2010-04-14T13:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=1409"},"modified":"2014-01-14T12:59:46","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T12:59:46","slug":"my-worst-ever-band-reviews-in-music-papers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/my-worst-ever-band-reviews-in-music-papers\/","title":{"rendered":"My worst ever band reviews in music papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Our crap reviews\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/reviews.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prompted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.net\/vbulletin\/showthread.php?t=321927\" target=\"_blank\">a thread on urban75<\/a>, here&#8217;s two of my worst reviews &#8211; and boy are they shockers!<\/p>\n<p>This one below appeared in NME about my punk band, Beggar. We later heard the writer Roy Carr wasn&#8217;t actually at the gig (hence the curious stuff about &#8220;waving leaks&#8221;) but I liked being compared to a revving car &#8220;plagued with big end problems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in Wales, the final line gave us much kudos too: &#8220;Not surprisingly, the evening ended in a fight,&#8221; because just about all our Valleys gigs ended up like that.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not much else to do in Tonypandy on a Saturday night, you see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/beggar.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Beggar review in NME\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/beggar-1.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Click on image for bigger version)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kau Tau kicked<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Things were looking a bit better for a band I was in a few years later called Kau Tau.<\/p>\n<p>I hated the name with a vengeance, but we put on good live shows, were managed by Hanoi Rock&#8217;s team and managed to bag a publishing deal with Virgin.<\/p>\n<p>The band members were a right laugh too, so we had loads of fun on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds journalist Mary Anne Hobbs seem to like us a lot too, \u00a0lovingly reviewing us as, &#8220;these latest wet knicker wonders are Grade A cutie pies&#8221;&#8230; &#8220;radiating Ray Ban cool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Jane Simon, her colleague at Sounds, wasn&#8217;t <em>quite<\/em> so keen, and penned this hilarious review.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it smarted a bit at the time (I doubt if the the poor singer ever got over his neck being described in such a manner!), but no one&#8217;s going to complain about a half page review in what was then one of the UK&#8217;s\u00a0 biggest music papers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kau-tau-1.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kau tau review in Sounds\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/kau-tau.gif\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n(Click on image for bigger version)<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Mary Anne Hobbs went on to become a Radio One DJ and is still playing big gigs as a\u00a0 DJ, but where&#8217;s Jane Simon with all her smartarse quips, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Firmly residing in the &#8220;Where Are They Now?&#8221; file, that&#8217;s where!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prompted by a thread on urban75, here&#8217;s two of my worst reviews &#8211; and boy are they shockers!
