href=\"http:\/\/www.thedukeinwhitstable.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">pub&#8217;s website<\/a> reports that there has been an inn on this site for more than 300 years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/whitstable-shops-pubs-high-street-07.jpg\" alt=\"Shops, Pubs and High Street scenes of the seaside town of Whitstable, Kent\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Up until 1747, it was known as the Noah\u2019s Ark, when landlord Robert Chandler renamed it Duke William in honour of the Duke of Cumberland who, a year earlier, had crushed the Scottish rebellion at Culloden.<\/p>\n<p>Used as the headquarters for local oyster and dredger men, the pub was rebuilt in splendid late Victorian style in 1878 after a major fire in target=\"_blank\">Peter Cushing pub<\/a>\u00a0took over the premises of the\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">former\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0cinema and bingo hall known as The Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The pub is named after legendary Hammer Horror star and erstwhile Whitstable resident, Peter Cushing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What I did like though was the temporary exhibition of prints by artists living and working in East Kent, including some wonderful woodblock prints by \u00a0Ben Whitstable, Kent\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Whitstable was found to be the\u00a0town with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitstable.org\/2011\/01\/01\/keeping-whitstable-an-independent-oasis\/\" target=\"_blank\">highest proportion of\u00a0independent shops<\/a>\u00a0in the UK, and it lends the town a really charming, old fashioned air.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"
