{"id":14451,"date":"2014-04-30T14:00:13","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T13:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=14451"},"modified":"2014-04-30T10:43:59","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T09:43:59","slug":"red-hook-brooklyn-street-scenes-graffiti-and-dock-views","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/red-hook-brooklyn-street-scenes-graffiti-and-dock-views\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Hook, Brooklyn &#8211; street scenes, graffiti and waterfront views"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/red-hook-brooklyn-photos-01.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of street scenes, docks and graffiti of Red Hook, Brooklyn, USA\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inaccessible and run down enough to ward off all but the most hardy hipsters and developers, Red Hook is situated in the south-western corner of the New York City borough of Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/red-hook-brooklyn-photos-02.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of street scenes, docks and graffiti of Red Hook, Brooklyn, USA\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Red Hook hosts a\u00a0large and impoverished housing project and is somewhat isolated because of its poor transportation links, with the nearest subway located a considerable distance away [<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/realestate\/articles\/neighborhoods\/redhook.htm\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Hopes to introduce a historic street car service to\u00a0the area recently failed, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-future-looks-bleak-for-three-abandoned-trolley-cars-from-the-red-hook-waterfront-in-brooklyn\/\" target=\"_blank\">three vintage trolley cars being removed from the waterfront<\/a> in February 2014, although there are several buses and ferries serving the area. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Hook,_Brooklyn#Transportation\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/red-hook-brooklyn-photos-03.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of street scenes, docks and graffiti of Red Hook, Brooklyn, USA\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With its heyday of the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s far behind it, much of the area remains unloved and in a poor state.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has recovered considerably from its post-industrial 1990s nadir, when\u00a0\u00a0LIFE magazine declared it\u00a0to be one of the worst neighbourhoods in the United States and\u00a0the &#8216;crack capital of America.&#8217; \u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/photos\/newyork\/red-hook-brooklyn-photos.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>A recent influx of artists and new businesses has sparked some recovery for Red Hook, but I reckon it&#8217;ll be a while before Starbucks start opening up on every street corner (not that I want to see that anyway).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/red-hook-brooklyn-photos-04.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of street scenes, docks and graffiti of Red Hook, Brooklyn, USA\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s
