{"id":14675,"date":"2014-05-30T12:04:11","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T11:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=14675"},"modified":"2014-05-30T12:10:21","modified_gmt":"2014-05-30T11:10:21","slug":"a-walk-around-grand-ferry-park-williamsburg-brooklyn-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-walk-around-grand-ferry-park-williamsburg-brooklyn-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"A walk around Grand Ferry Park, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/grand-ferry-park-nyc-09.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Grand Ferry Park, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Affording fabulous views of Manhattan across the East River,\u00a0Grand Ferry Park is a lovely place to pass away a few quiet hours and watch the world go by.<\/p>\n<p>Located between\u00a0Grand Street, West River Street, and the East River,\u00a0it&#8217;s a small and intimate park that makes a\u00a0perfect romantic spot to watch the sun go down with a couple of beers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/grand-ferry-park-nyc-01.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Grand Ferry Park, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once a ferry landing serving the growing population of\u00a0Williamsburg before it became part of Brooklyn, Grand Ferry Park is named after the 19th century Grand Street Ferry, which once carried farm goods and passengers across the East River to Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry was the brainchild of real estate speculator Richard Woodhull, who saw the potential in creating a residential suburb across the river from\u00a0Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry started between what is now\u00a0Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn and\u00a0Corlear\u2019s Hook on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1802.<\/p>\n<p>Woodhull bought up 13 acres of land adjoining the ferry landing, but things didn&#8217;t go to plan as he was declared bankrupt just four years later.<\/p>\n<p>His property empire may not have flourished, but he is responsible for naming the area, \u00a0calling it \u2018Williamsburgh\u2019 after Colonel Jonathan Williams (1750-1815), the original surveyor of the site.<\/p>\n<p>He sounds suspiciously of Welsh origin to me, so I&#8217;m going to insist\u00a0that all those hipsters supping coffee around the neighbourhood owe a debt to us Taffies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/grand-ferry-park-nyc-02.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Grand Ferry Park, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0Woodhull&#8217;s setback, Williamsburgh proved a hit, with a new steam ferry opening in 1818 attracting more industries, while\u00a0wealthy professionals frequented the nearby private clubs, beer gardens, and resorts .<\/p>\n<p>With companies like Pfizer Pharmaceutical and the Havermeyers &amp;
