I took my camera with me and grabbed this collection of around\u00a070 photos from\u00a0the station. I hope you enjoy them.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-02.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dating back to Edwardian times and closing in 1994, the station was known as the Strand until 1915 and formed part of the Piccadilly line network. Above you can see the\u00a0original sign for the booking hall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-03.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The group walk through the entrance on the Strand into the booking hall area, with a\u00a0line of old phone box booths to the right.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-04.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seeing as we were about to be walking around a disused station with wobbly floors and hundreds of steps to walk up and down, there was a shedload of <em>&#8216;elf and safety<\/em> items that we needed to be told about.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, they were delivered with a decent amount of humour by the fella in the dark blue shirt.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-05.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A late addition to the station was this heritage styled ticket office that installed in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-06.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-07.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heading down\u00a0the 160 steps to the platforms. abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the volunteer guides.<\/p>\n<p>The Strand\u00a0branch opened until 30 November 1907, and was served by shuttle trains running from\u00a0Holborn into the two\u00a0platforms at the station.<\/p>\n<p>With low traffic levels from the start, the second platform was taken out of use as early as 1914.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-09.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In anticipation of the never-fulfilled promise of the line being extended to Waterloo, the station was generously provisioned with three circular lift shafts able to accommodate six trapezium-shaped lifts.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, cutbacks meant that only one of the shafts was fitted out with a pair of \u00a0lifts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an economy measure, only one set of stairs and passages to the platforms were built (see illustration below), and in this view, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The depth of the station meant that it was used extensively as a public shelter during World War 2, with parts of the site used for storing precious national works of art.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-12.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the track level, there was an old 1970s tube train parked in the western platform, looking like it was ready to depart to Holborn.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-13.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Short, snappy and rather entertaining talks were delivered by the volunteer guide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-14.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much like the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/kingsway-old-tram-tunnel\/\">Kingsway tram tunnel<\/a>, the station is still\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldwych_tube_station#Use_in_media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used extensively for filming<\/a>, so a lot of the things we\u00a0saw on the platform (like this tube sign) aren&#8217;t actually authentic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/the-strand-aldwych-tube-station-15.jpg\" alt=\"A tour of the abandoned Strand \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some recent filming had left the platform with a rather splendid collection of replica wartime into use.<\/p>\n<p>If things had worked out differently the tunnel would have continued under the Thames to Waterloo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/Aldwych tube station in central London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It seems incredible now, but\u00a0smoking was allowed in certain carriages of tube\u00a0trains until 9 July 1984. \/><\/p>\n<p>Traffic was so low that in October 1922, the ticket office was replaced by a man selling tickets in the lifts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" operating only during peak hours for more than 30 years, the end was finally announced on 4th January 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a0\u00a33m cost of replacing the 1907 lifts proved to be the final straw on top of the \u00a3150k the line was losing every year.<\/p>\n<p>With only 450 passengers using the station each day and all plans to extend the line long since vanished, the branch closed on 30th
