{"id":14763,"date":"2014-06-09T11:50:54","date_gmt":"2014-06-09T10:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/?p=14763"},"modified":"2014-06-09T11:57:58","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T10:57:58","slug":"a-sunny-walk-through-a-rose-packed-regents-park-in-central-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/a-sunny-walk-through-a-rose-packed-regents-park-in-central-london\/","title":{"rendered":"A sunny walk through a rose-packed Regent&#8217;s Park in central London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-01.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of London&#8217;s larger parks, The Regent&#8217;s Park\u00a0covers 395 acres and includes\u00a0the magnificent\u00a0Queen Mary&#8217;s Gardens which packs in more than 30,000 rose-bushes and 400 cultivars.<\/p>\n<p>I took a walk around the park on a sunny Saturday afternoon &#8211; here&#8217;s some photos from my travels.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-02.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Part of \u00a0of the vast chase appropriated by Henry VIII after the <a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Dissolution of the Monasteries\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries\">Dissolution of the Monasteries<\/a>, Regent&#8217;s Park has been Crown Property ever since (save for as period between 1649 and 1660 when it set aside as a hunting park, and known as Marylebone Park). [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Regent's_Park#History\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>In 1811, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) commissioned architect John Nash to create a masterplan for the area, although the original plans for a palace for the Prince and a selection of grand detached villas for his chums failed to make the final mix.<\/p>\n<p>The Park became the home of several organisations like the Zoological Society and the Royal Botanic Society, although it wasn&#8217;t until 1835 that the general public were granted any kind of access to the park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-03.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">The park has known tragedy, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2012\/jan\/15\/disaster-ice-skating-regents-park\" target=\"_blank\">forty people dying<\/a> after the\u00a0ice cover on the boating lake collapsed and over 200 people plunged into the lake on 15 January 1867.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">To prevent a similar catastrophe happening again, the water was drained and the lake bed raised with soil and concrete, leaving the lake just four feet deep.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-04.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Entrance to\u00a0Queen Mary&#8217;s Gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly used as a plant nursery, Queen Mary&#8217;s Gardens in the Inner Circle were created in the 1930s, bringing that part of the park into use by the general public for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-05.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Named after the wife of King George V, Queen Mary\u2019s Garden contains London&#8217;s largest collection of roses.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Royal Horticultural Society,\u00a0roses flower earlier in the London parks than anywhere else in England, so my visit was just about perfectly timed to see them\u00a0in full bloom, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/gardens\/GardenDetails?id=142&amp;cboCounty=fife\" target=\"_blank\">their site<\/a> explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Above all, Queen Mary&#8217;s Gardens are known for their rose gardens &#8211; 30,000 rose-bushes and 400 cultivars. Large beds are planted with just one cultivar each &#8211; mainly modern hybrid teas and floribundas, though there are English roses and old-fashioned ones, too, more often in mixed borders.<\/p>\n<p>At one end is a circular catenary of climbing and rambling roses around yet more beds of bright modern roses: a spectacular sight in early June &#8211; roses flower earlier in the London parks than anywhere else in England, and are worth a visit at any time after about the middle of May.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-06.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The smell of the roses is almost overwhelming as you walk through.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-07.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are several fountains in the park, and this is one of the\u00a0most impressive.<\/p>\n<p>The Triton Fountain\u00a0is the\u00a0showpiece of Queen Mary&#8217;s Gardens, and was created by William McMillan and donated to the park in 1950 in memory of Sigismund Goetz, a well known local artist.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-21.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-22.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A particularly splendid example\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/advice\/profile?PID=720\" target=\"_blank\">topiary<\/a>, a gardening practice that dates back to early Roman times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-23.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" of squirrels scuttling about the park. Some are quite tame too.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d be grateful if the ones currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/the-brixton-barrier-block-squirrel-and-its-wire-chewing-antics-now-its-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">eating the plants and chewing the power cables<\/a> in my ninth\u00a0storey tower block flat would consider joining their park dwelling chums.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-25.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The park plays host to many sports, including Tennis, Netball, Athletics, Cricket, Softball, Rounders, Football, Hockey, Australian Rules Football, Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee and Running.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-26.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some were feeling less sporty than others.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-27.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-28.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/regents-park-london-29.jpg\" alt=\"A sunny walk through Regent's Park in central London, June 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Get off your bike.
