Cleator,\u00a0the Society can claim to be the\u00a0the oldest space advocacy organisation in the world, and has\u00a0the motto, &#8220;From imagination to reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Casually rummaging around on their website last week, I discovered that the Interplanetary gang regularly hosted interesting science talks, and when I saw that there\u00a0was an upcoming talk entitled\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bis-space.com\/2014\/06\/23\/13156\/life-on-mars-the-european-exomars-programme\" target=\"_blank\">Life on Mars? \u2013 The European ExoMars Programme<\/a>,&#8221; I whipped out my tenner quicker than a Saturn V rocket in full flight.<\/p>\n<p>Unsure of what was in store, I\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.net\/forums\/threads\/the-british-interplanetary-society.327022\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted on the urban75 forums<\/a> before the talk, wondering whether I was\u00a0going to encounter real science-type people or gangs of cardigan-wearing blokes wearing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Worf\" target=\"_blank\">Worf<\/a>\u00a0foreheads, talking in Klingon and making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dv22oNyamTg\" target=\"_blank\">whoosh! of the Star Trek doors<\/a> as they came\u00a0in.<\/p>\n<p>Happily, most of my stereotypes were soon proved wrong, and although it was definitely quite blokey and spoddy, everyone seemed friendly enough. three other locations that were shortlisted for Curiosity are indicated with yellow circles. Other stars and ellipses are used to indicate past and future missions&#8217; touchdown spots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #031e31;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/53941-scientists-favour-four-exomars-landing-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\">ESA site<\/a> explains more abut the mission:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #031e31;\">Time is of the essence if the maximum scientific return from ExoMars is to be achieved. The rover can cover a limited driving range in the course of its seven-month nominal surface exploration mission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #031e31;\">The spacecraft&#8217;s ballistic entry into the atmosphere is a rather imprecise procedure which means that it could land anywhere within a 104 km x 19 km ellipse. In order to ensure that the rover spends as much time as possible conducting scientific research, a landing ellipse should contain a scattering of suitable sites to ensure that at least some of them are accessible to the rover.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #031e31;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/british-interplanetary-society-09.jpg\" alt=\"A trip to the British Interplanetary Society to learn about Mars with Abigail Hutty,  BIS, 27\/29 South Lambeth Road, Vauxhall, London, SW8 1SZ, September 2014\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The verdict<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I really enjoyed spending time at the Interplanetary Society and I liked the fact that it does feel so exquisitely British\u00a0with a sense of quirky DIY about it.
