Exhibition at the British Library, Kings Cross, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Billed\u00a0as\u00a0the &#8220;UK\u2019s biggest ever Gothic exhibition,\u00a0&#8220;<em>Terror and Wonder, the Gothic Imagination<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0opens today at the British Library in central London.<\/p>\n<p>Displaying two\u00a0hundred rare objects, the exhibition traces 250 years of the Gothic tradition, exploring our enduring fascination with the mysterious, the terrifying and the macabre.<\/p>\n<p>Being rather partial to Victorian ghost tales, spooky stories,\u00a0Hammer Horror, the Batcave and all things of a dark and twisted nature, we went down and took a look around &#8211; and we liked what we saw very much indeed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/terror-wonder-british-library-02.jpg\" alt=\"Terror and Wonder, the Gothic Imagination. Exhibition at the British Library, Kings Cross, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The exhibition space has been laid out in an appropriately Gothic manner, with draped black sheets shimmering as you walk past. The space starts with a walk through Horace Walpole&#8217;s &#8216;Gothic World.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Walpole\u00a0is largely remembered for <a title=\"Strawberry Hill House\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strawberry_Hill_House\" target=\"_blank\">Strawberry Hill<\/a>, the fabulously extravagant home he built in <a title=\"Twickenham\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twickenham\">Twickenham<\/a>, south-west London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his\u00a0Victorian successors, and for his Gothic novel, <a title=\"The Castle of Otranto\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Castle_of_Otranto\" target=\"_blank\">The Castle of Otranto<\/a>. [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horace_Walpole\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/terror-wonder-british-library-03.jpg\" alt=\"Terror and Wonder, the Gothic Imagination. Exhibition at the British Library, Kings Cross, London\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The wonderful mini-library of the grandly named 17th century lawyer, Sir Julius Caesar, which was acquired by Walpole in 1757.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/terror-wonder-british-library-05.jpg\" alt=\"Terror and Wonder, the Gothic Imagination.
