Above is the old Free Off Licence on Railton Road (aka The Frontline).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been closed for ages now, and it looks like it may lose its shop frontage and\u00a0 be converted into a home, like most of the former shops on this strip. Still with all its original fittings inside and looking like it could be ready to reopen at a few hours notice, the chippie has been closed for at least six years now. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/history\/lost-cafes.html\" target=\"_blank\">See June 2004 photo here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixtonphotos-may-2010-03.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Brixton - and that rubbish Windrush water feature\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brixton Water Lane (next to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urban75.org\/brixton\/features\/brockwell.html\">Brockwell park<\/a>) has some stunning early Victorian and Regency properties.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixtonphotos-may-2010-04.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Brixton - and that rubbish Windrush water feature\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another lovely house on Brixton Water Lane.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOME BRIXTON WATER LANE FACTS!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FILM FAME<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl (starring Laurence Olivier  and Marilyn Monroe) Charles, the Prince Regent (played by Olivier) asks  Elsie Marina (played by Monroe) where she lives, to which Monroe  replies &#8220;Brixton Water Lane.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MURDER MOST FOUL<\/strong><br \/>\nA &#8220;TRAGIC AND MYSTERIOUS MURDER&#8221; took  place at 44 Brixton Water Lane in May, 1900 where a Mrs. Kate Wakenell  was found with twenty-seven stabs from a pair of scissors.<br \/>\n<a href=\"..\/..\/brixton\/features\/murder-in-brixton-1900.html\">Read the full story<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/brixtonphotos-may-2010-05.jpg\" alt=\"A walk around Brixton - and that rubbish Windrush water feature\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Houses near the entrance to the park.
