Designed to reflect the strength and efficiency of the socialist party system in the late 60s, the tower\u00a0was brought into use in October 1969.<\/p>\n<p>More than a million people visit the TV tower per year. \u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tv-turm.de\/en\/geschichte.php\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212;<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berlin-street-photos-11.jpg\" alt=\"Berlin street photos - a selection of photographs taken around Berlin,  Germany\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Close to the tower there&#8217;s a series of mini trampolines embedded in the\u00a0pavement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berlin-street-photos-12.jpg\" alt=\"Berlin street photos - a selection of photographs taken around Berlin,  Germany\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most passers by find them irresistible.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berlin-street-photos-13.jpg\" alt=\"Berlin street photos - a selection of photographs taken around Berlin,  Germany\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Berlin red brick architecture against darkening sky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.urban75.org\/blog\/images\/berlin-street-photos-14.jpg\" alt=\"Berlin street photos - a selection of photographs taken around Berlin,  Germany\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Known as\u00a0stolperstein (stumbling block), these monuments created by <a title=\"Gunter Demnig\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gunter_Demnig\">Gunter Demnig<\/a>\u00a0can be seen on pavements all around Berlin, and each one\u00a0commemorates a victim of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>They commemorate individuals \u2013 both those who died and survivors \u2013 of Nazi\u00a0prisons, euthanasia facilities,\u00a0sterilization clinics, concentration camps, and extermination camps, as well as those who responded to persecution by emigrating or committing suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Although most\u00a0stolpersteine commemorate Jewish victims of the Holocaust, others have been placed for Sinti and Romani people, homosexuals, Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses, black people, Christians (both Protestants and Catholics) opposed to the Nazis, members of the Communist Party and the Resistance, military deserters, and the physically and mentally disabled.
